"Au jour le jour", in Montreal.

Just one look at the Chase Jarvis Shoe Project Flickr Pool and you will see that iintrigue from Montreal has no shortage of ideas.
As well as having the Concept Dept. cranking at full speed he has his Production Dept. on overtime.
I asked him about his process of filtering the ideas and deciding just which ones he is going to shoot... " So long as I still find the concept cool while holding the camera in my hand… I’ll go and give it a shot! Although most of the times, my actual photos look nothing like I had imagined in my head " He went on to say " When I do have a concept in mind, I usually bounce the ideas around with my friends to get some feedback and new ideas develop from there. Most shoots/concepts are really “au jour le jour” with a general framework but nothing concrete. A friend of mine has told me that I’m too much of a planner once an idea enters my head. Especially when working in a group, I have to make a conscious effort to relax and force myself to be more accepting of “surprises” that happen during the work flow"

"The shot above is the only shot that I had really pre-planned. I knew that I wanted to somehow merge the city of Montreal into my photograph and had to find some creative way to make it look interesting. Light painting came to mind. A couple hours before the shoot, I ran off to dollarama to buy 2 packs of glowsticks as well as those mini-firework sparklers that people use at birthdays. The initial concept was to have a sea of color by having a trail of glows being carried by the waters current but I quickly noticed that my glowsticks were far too weak to do the trick. Thank goodness I had purchased those extra firework sparklers (20 small ones in total) and after a couple random experiments, I simply began taking the same exposure over and over while throwing in as many of the sparklers into the lake. I then merged all the shots into a sort of manual-HDR in photoshop using primarily the “Auto-Blend” function and then doing custom masking of elements I wanted to bring back in. A bit of planning, a lot of experimentation"
